Jil Sander: Pushes Boundaries and Sets New Standards

Jil by Jil Sander
Amber Floral
Bruno Jovanovic, Olivier Polge

Jil is a perfume from 2009 made by a minimalist fashion designer Jil Sander. I first smelled it many years ago on my best friend Sandra. She got it as a gift from her mother. As far as I remember, it smelled strong, night-time, sexy, almost masculine. Of course, I asked her what she was wearing and she answered Jil by Jil Sander. Wow. With that in mind, I got my hands on a sample years later; and surprisingly, I still love it. Unfortunately, the fragrance has been discontinued; otherwise, I would consider buying a full bottle.

Jil is a lavender, pink pepper dominant scent with creamy heliotrope and orris in the heart and sensual vanilla, musk and amber in the base. I would wear it during fall and winter, day and night, it does not really matter. It is not a girly girl but rather a badass woman who wears this. A bold aroma for sure but somehow still bearable and not that difficult to wear. I think it is the lavender that makes it softer and even calming in a way.

The fragrance is marketed toward women but I feel that it is almost genderless. Considering the launch year, it is brave for Mister Jovanovic and Polge to come up with something vampy and underground. When Jil was still on the market, the price was very favourable. The scent reflects the price. It is a great scent in terms of originality and versatility; however, I recognise it is neither a niche nor luxurious designer brand. It can smell a little bit cheap and the projection and lasting power are not endless.
